Dish Rag Tag 2008 and Knitting Psycho

Woo Hoo!!!!!!!!! If you aren't already signed up go visit Emily to read all about it and SIGN UP!!

Knitting Psycho: O.K. here's the deal.....when you are in public and see someone knitting...what is the FIRST thought that crosses your mind? Do you think Ahhhh.......knit sister or do you think....DANGER, get away FAST??!!! Do you walk up and introduce yourself? What do you do when you run across a fellow knitter???

I have N.E.V.E.R. EVER felt threatened.....have you???? I sort of think if you knit you are "one of us"...even if I don't know you......you are a KNITTER for crying out loud and we are all sisters of the Fiberhood!!!!

The Scene:
Sunday I was sitting in the cell phone parking lot at the airport, waiting to pick up my sister, knitting away on a sock when a car pulls up next to me. I continued to knit, occasionally glancing up to check the arrival board. Something caught my eye......a movement with a little flash of silver....I look over and THERE......sitting RIGHT NEXT to me in the Cell Phone Parking Lot.....is a KNITTER.....my unknown sister of the Knitsterhood.......knitting what appears to be the beginnings of possibly a vest or sweater on knitpicks needles!! Immediately I felt the need to make my knitting presence known.....so I waived....she looks over....I raise my sock knitting and smiled. She looked at me like I had lost my mind.....sort of weakly smiling at me...then quickly put her car in drive and LEFT!!!!!!!!!

Now.....I would LIKE to think that her party had arrived....but I didn't see her answer her cell phone......just looked at me and hit the high road!!!

I sat in utter shock for a minute, then I got so tickled I couldn't help but laugh!!! I know I didn't have much make-up on....and I do look rather pale and scary without any....but come ON.....I was Knitting for goodness sake!!!!!

Hmmm......maybe she was intimidated by my sock knitting!!! LOL!!!!!!!!!

Are you quite certain she was knitting? Is there any possibility whatsoever that she might have been crocheting? I'm just saying.....afterall you never can tell.
Best wishes

HA!!! I love it! Actually, don't feel bad. That happened to me down at the beach. There was a lady sitting next to the pool, knitting a Cookie A. sock (can't remember which). I walked up to her and introduced myself (and my sock-in-progress) and complimented hers. She looked at me like I was some weird knitting serial killer. ROTFL!!!

If I was approached while knitting, especially by another knitter, I would be so happy my enthusiasm would probably scare them off.

Mostly little kids come up and stare, not in a "you are weird way" rather in a " wow that looks confusing and dangerous (dpn's) and cool." Then I feel all special that I can make something out of string and sticks.

I've had people come up and talk to me when I was knitting. Some were knitters. Some weren't. I never felt the need to run away. :)

But there was a time at the mall when I was spindle spinning while Rick was doing something. A kid started to come over and his mom gave me a terrified look and dragged him away. LOL! I haven't had to courage to spin in public since then.

You crack me up! I approach everyone crocheters and stick girls that I see. Some have looked at me like you are crazy and need to leave others know I am that girl they don't want to mess with in the dark alley!Hehehehe.....

Aren't people funny, I'd love it if other knitters introduced themselves

I would be so excited to see another public knitter! I've decided there's a total of 10 knitters in Montgomery.

If I see you, I won't run. :-)

That does seem a little strange to me too. I always enjoy any conversation about knitting and it had to be the socks you were knitting!

I too, thought all knitters were "friendly"! Hmmm, there must be knitting snobs in the world. I'm all for knitting sistas!!!

I totally would've done the same thing as you - it's so great to see another knitter in the wild! People are strange.

That is just too funny! I would have never thought someone would run away! I've had the usual "You're Weird" looks but most people are friendly. There was a woman knitting where I work & I stopped & said, hey I'm a knitter too, whatcha knitting?... I think at first she was a little startled that I stopped & spoke to her but then we got to gabbing...

Thanks for sharing that story! I needed a good laugh!

That's weird. Were you knitting on dpn's? Maybe she thought they were a WMD?

Maybe she had crochet and was intimidated by your ability to make garments with a needle in both hands... I always "doff my knitting" to other knitters I see in public (usually with a manic grin).
